Originally constructed in the First World War, RAF Spitalgate, or Spittlegate, was given the name ‘RAF Station Grantham’ in 1928, and then renamed in 1942. It is located to the east of the town of Grantham.
At the outbreak of the Second World War, the airfield was a training accommodation for No. 12 Service Flying Training School (SFTS). In April 1942, the school was renamed No. 12 (P) AFU and operated mainly Blenheim aircraft. In March 1943, No. 1536 BAT flight was formed and remained here until the end of the war. Numerous other training units were based here between 1944 and 1945.
The airfield was made up of three grass runways, two of which were covered in Sommerfeld tracking: metal wire mesh laid on the ground.
The former airfield is now owned by the British Army.
