RAF North Killingholme opened in November 1943 as a class ‘A’ airfield intended for heavy bombers. The airfield is located to the north of North Killingholme.

The airfield was made up of three main concrete runways, all connected by a perimeter track, and 36 dispersals (parking areas for aircraft). In total, there were three aircraft hangars on the airfield. The bomb stores for the airfield were located to the west, personnel accommodations were situated north of the village.

On 3 January 1944, No. 550 Squadron arrived at the airfield with their Lancaster bombers. They were the only operational unit based at the airfield and remained here until the squadron was disbanded on 1 November 1945. In total, the squadron flew 3,582 missions with the loss of 59 Lancasters during that period. In addition, the airfield was chosen to test the maximum amount of fuel and bombs a Lancaster could take off with.

On 5 June 1944, the squadron took part in Operation Overlord and bombed targets on the Normandy coastline. Lancaster LL811 J-Jig, nicknamed ‘Bad Penny III’, was credited with dropping the first string of bombs to mark the start of the assault.

On 25 April 1945, the squadron took part in an operation aimed at bombing Obersalzberg, Germany. This was the location of Hitlers Berghof and senior Nazi officials’ residences and bunkers. Between 29 April and 7 May 1945, the squadron took part in Operation Manna, the dropping of food supplies over the Netherlands to aid the starving civilians there.

The airfield was relinquished in 1950 and is now an industrial park. Parts of the runways still exist but are on private land. Sections of the airfield can be seen on Lancaster Approach, including a memorial to the squadron at the entry to the park. The old control tower can be seen on the western side of the airfield, behind the residential properties close to the road. The three main hangars are also still on site.
